Nov 26: Discussion Questions for Book Clubs

Many authors use big words to show off how smart they are and lord it over everyone that they know how to write books. Think about some of the big words in this book, and discuss how the author could have been simpler and more direct if he wasn’t such an asshole.

Raise your hand if you actually finished reading this book. Be honest, we’re all friends here.

Think about the various realities you are reading to escape. Were any of these realities reflected by anything within this book? Why can’t people just write nice books that people can enjoy?

If you haven’t finished reading the book, who the hell do you think you are to come in here and pretend you have? What kind of person lies to their friends about something so trivial?

A lot of time in this book is devoted to the main character. Do you think this character would think I was cool?

Who here do you guys think is most likely to be lying about having finished reading the entire book? What do you think we should do them once their deception is revealed?

Is there anything you would change about this book to make it reinforce your vision or understanding of reality?

Many authors use unreliable narrators to complicate their plots. If you are lying about having finished reading this entire book, what was your plan coming in here, knowing we’d be having an in-depth discussion about the book?

Many books take years to complete, and writing them can be a frustrating and solitary ordeal. Which characters in this book would you most like to have sex with?

Once the people who are lying about having finished the book are revealed and dealt with, who here swears not to testify against me?

Does this book have any themes? If there are themes, are symbols used to explore these themes? Do those sound like questions that someone who knows a lot about books might come up with?

Making fun of people who participate in book clubs is mean. Do you think that people who make fun of book clubs are mocking them to mask something they dislike about themselves?
